Along with praising God through the gospel lyrics, gospel links up with rhythm, melody, harmony and tempo. When the guitar and other instruments are added to gospel, the human psyche is more stimulated than with only singing alone. The mental, emotional and physical effects can bring on a natural euphoric feeling strong enough for a longer lasting spiritual uplift. With gospel music believed to only have been around close to a century, there are some that do not truly recognize gospel as an appropriate religious music and this is especially true when adding guitars and other instruments.

This question alone has a forever continuing debate between various religious sects differentiating between what should and should not be allowed music wise in the churches. The ones who argue against guitar picking gospel music are usually against most all types of music because of a belief in music being the work of the Devil, due to the movement and emotions music physically causes in us.

Convincing those who truly love gospel music out there though that they are doing wrong would surely not even possible. In its 100 years or so, gospel has hit its popularity heights and falls, but never to disappear completely. Gospel has touched so many areas of music through out its short history. The variations on gospel music is a wide ever changing spectrum from Sam Cooke’s smooth sounds of the 1930’s to country, pop, R&B, Hip Hop and even gospel’s very own record company category of today. With all of these types of gospel music to choose from, it is no wonder why old gospel guitar tabs are so high in demand.

So many out there today play various types of guitars and for many different reasons, old gospel guitar tabs are being searched for to be purchased by beginners and professional guitar experts alike. There are many sites dedicated to selling old gospel guitar for all types of musical mixtures of musical rhythms and instruments. But there are those who want only the original guitars for keeping their sounds to what was first written.

Positive Music for a Relaxing Meditation

Meditation music produces measurable results. It slows our heartbeats down to about one beat per second, which can allow us to relax, let go, meditate and/or fall asleep.

Mokless Girgis There are different types of meditation however, and different types of music are appropriate for each. A relaxing meditation is intended to help you slow down and release stress, so the best music is easy to listen to and has elements that embody peace and harmony. The instruments and type of music are those that you associate with these qualities. This can differ from person to person. For example, you might associate flute music with lilting tunes and it might then invigorate you, while someone else may equate flute music with peaceful forest scenes or waterfalls.

Positive music is the best kind for meditation because it has beneficial qualities and is emotionally and spiritually uplifting, many believe even healing. Additionally, it can be relaxing, calming, or even physically and mentally stimulating. Positive music is not about lyrics, but about the music itself.

The music of the ’50s was almost all positive, so much so that there was no need to call it that, as there was no “negative” music to speak of. Today’s music is much different; heavy metal, grunge, punk rock, and other genres all contribute to a large body of negative music, music that expresses and evokes images of anger, fear, ugliness, hatred and pain. Even classical music written with a lot of discord can be considered negative. In the early 20th century, the works of Arthur Schonburg were rejected and in some instances almost caused riots amongst concert goers. Since then discordant music has been accepted and incorporated by modern music composers and music schools.

Negative music has become a part of modern tv and movies, forming the basis of music scores that evoke terror, suspense, and fear, and thereby helping to shape modern culture.

Positive music, on the other hand, has been present through all time, and thanks to modern media, people are becoming aware of positive music forms they never even knew existed before, examples of which are Gregorian chants and ancient Jewish and Arabic music. Positive music has the ability to transform and uplift, infuse people with feelings of content and wellbeing.

This is not to say that sad music is negative. I’m thinking specifically of the music of Sarah McLachlan when I say that a singer/songwriter can reach deep and then soar, and leave you with a feeling of being understood in your sadness, yet uplifted with comfort and hope. There is rock music such as the music of the Moody Blues or U2 which can evoke images of angels.

This is therefore not a statement about any particular genre of music in its entirety, just that if you listen carefully, you will recognize whether the music you are listening to is positive or negative by the way your mind, body, emotions and psyche react. When you are practicing a relaxing meditation, you can learn to choose the right music, and positive music is a great place to start.

The History And Background Of The Guitar

Mokless GirgisCompared to some musical instruments, the guitar is a relative newcomer dating from the Middle Ages. It’s origins, go back to long before the beginnings of recorded history.

The first instrument was probably nothing more than a bow in the hands of a prehistoric hunter. One day, some nameless innovator attached a hollow gourd to the shaft of a bow. By hugging the gourd to his chest and bending the shaft back and forth with one hand (to change the tension on the string), he produced resonant notes by plucking the string with his other hand. Primitive instruments of this type are still played in various parts of Africa.

A natural outgrowth of the single-string bow was the “bow-harp”, consisting of several strings attached to a single soundbox and strung so as to yeild different notes when plucked by the fingers. This “one string, one note” principle was common to all instruments of the harp family known to early inhabitants of the lands around eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea.They included the Nubian kissar, the Greek kithara and the lyre of the Greeks, Assyrians and other Near Eastern peoples. David, King of Israel and slayer of Goliath, was said to have been proficient on the lyre.

Although the Egyptian nefer (which had both soundbox and a neck) was in use well before the time of Christ, the first “neck” instrument about very much is known was Chinese. The tzi-tze, as it was called after the emperor who invented it in the fifth century B.C., was a small square box, punctured at the top, with four strings running the length of a thick bamboo cane. Historians believe that this instrument influenced the development of Western stringed instruments, particularly the Arab ud which eventually became the lute.

From the Greek word kithara came the names of both guitar and zither. In ancient Rome, the kithara was also called the fidula, which in time gave rise to the words vihela, once used in Spain for “guitar”, and violao, still used in Portugal. “viola” and “violin” stem from the same source, as does “fiddle”. The ud (in Arabic, Al ud) had a soundbox shaped like a melon or a giant pear sliced in half. When the Arabs and Moors invaded Spain in the eighth century, they took many examples of the instrument with them. Gradually “Al ud” spread from Spain, whose people called it the “laud”. to become the French liuth, the German laute and the English lute.

Centuries before this, after the fall of Rome, the music-loving Celts of Western Europe had added a fingerboard to the kithara, and called the resulting instrument the chrotta, which may simply have been their way of pronouncing the old name. In Provence, in South of France, the new instrument was called the crota. It was there, in all probability, that the guitar had its first beginnings, for Provence experienced a cultural flowering during the 11th and 12th centuries, in which music played a paramount role.

Troubadours who accompanied themselves on the crota as they sang songs of love and war were key figures in Provencial society. often of knightly rank, they were poets and lyricists who generally composed works as they sang.

To keep up with the ever-more sophisticated tastes of their noble audiences and so win fame and distinction over their rivals, some troubadours began to tinker with their instruments. by slow stages, the crota was refined to produce clearer notes of purer pitch and wider range, until it came to resemble in a general way, the modern guitar.

The transition was interrupted by a bitter religious war which ultimately destroyed the Provincial civilization and it’s way of life. Some of the Provincial troubadours fled to Italy, but more sought refuge in Spain, especially in nearby Catalonia. The Catalans, long familiar with the lute, eagerly adopted the improved crota and began to “cross-breed” it with the older instrument. Thus was laid in the thirteenth century, the foundations of that devotion to the guitar which was to make Spain the leading center for that instrument after well into the 20th Century.
